"The married life of the late King," says a recent writer, "was a singularly happy one. From the moment when, as the Sea-King's daughter from over the sea, she came to this country in all the radiant loveliness of her first youth as the betrothed of the heir to the English throne Queen Alexandra stepped forthwith into the hearts of the English people, while in its personal and private aspects the union which followed in due course proved one of a rarely felicitous kind. Numerous stories illustrative of the devotion of their Majesties to one another are current, but none perhaps which impressed more powerfully the popular imagination than that which told of the ceaseless vigil maintained by the Queen and the unending anxiety which she manifested during the terrible weeks of suspense which succeeded the postponement of the coronation.
