This picture showing the Post Office sorting car attached to the London and North-Western train for the north, illustrates an institution which has made greater progress during the century in this country than in any other. In 1800 the entire staff connected with the Post Office numbered 148 men. In 1839, 76,000,000 letters were posted. Three years later the figures rose to 169,000,000. The introduction of the penny post to the colonies, the postcard, and the parcels system have enormously increased these figures. An admirable article on the Post Office during the nineteenth century appeared in the "Times" on Friday.
