The accident occurred on the afternoon of December 27. At 3.15 a train left Arbroath for Dundee. While it was standing at Elliot Junction it was run into with terrific force by an express which also started a few minutes late from Arbroath for the south as it was unable to proceed further north on account of the storm. The local train was smashed to smithereens, with the result that twenty-one people were killed (including Mr. A. W. Black, M.P. for Banffshire), while eighteen were seriously injured. Gourley, the driver, was charged before the sheriff at Dundee on Tuesday with reckless driving and was committed to prison.
