Weighing the Anchor : A Scene on H.M.S. "Royal Oak." 1903

For Sale is a Full Page taken from "The Sphere, October 24th, 1903," showing a Drawing by Sheldon Williams called "Weighing the Anchor : A Scene on H.M.S. "Royal Oak."

When weighing the anchor it is first hove up to the bows and hung temporarily by a slip on deck. A man then goes over the side and hooks on the "cat pendant" (wire hauser) to the balancing band as here illustrated. The hawser is then brought to the capstan, the slip is knocked off, and the Anchor falls directly under the cat davit and is lifted by means of the capstan to its stowing position called the "anchor bed"
