After the Manoeuvres : The Fleet off Portugal. 1903

While carrying out the various tactics the fleets to save coal will occasionally put into Lagos Bay again to anchor for the night, proceeding to Lisbon at the end of the month. Lagos is a straggling little town full of cleanly whitewashed houses and most uncleanly smells-these assail you a full mile before reaching the beach. Except for a trolley hastily run out on a pair of rails into the surf, presumably for the accommodation of his Majesty Dom Carlos or dignitaries of the fleet, there is no landing stage worthy the name, and you jump from the bows of your boat or are carried ashore and back by sailors. Fish, including infant sharks, are brought to your notice in more ways than one, and vendors of grapes, green figs, and almonds solicit your patronage. There is an excellent beach affording capital bathing, and a pleasant afternoon may be spent strolling inland, where for a few reis a capital al fresco lunch may be procured among the vineyards and orchards surrounding the town.
