On the very first day that the Japanese were pounding the Russian Fleet in the Korean Straits Plymouth was placed on a War footing, a state of invasion being presumed to exit from May 27-31. The defence was in the hands of Major-General Sir John Leach, while the invasion was carried out by torpedo-boat destroyers and torpedoes under the command of the captain of H.M.S. "Defiance." The newly-formed Devonport submarine fleet took part in the night attack. On the various forts and batteries which guard the spproach to the Sound and form a cordon round the town over 2,000 artillery and about 200 engineers were engaged.
