The King left Osborne on the morning of January 23 accompanied by the Duke of York, the Duke of Connaught, Prince Christian, and the Duke of Argyll, in order to hold his first Council in London.

In the House of Commons the same procedure was gone through. The first to take the oath was Mr. Gully, the Speaker. Two hundred and ninety-eight members were sworn on the first day and 400 by the end of the second. The last member on the first day to take the oath was Mr. Samuel, who in Hebrew fashion wore his hat and was sworn on a copy of the Old Testament which he himself supplied.
