On fete days at Avila, in Spain, the young people go out from the town and select a flat piece of ground on which to play their favourite sport of throwing the crowbar, which is a kind of mixture of our putting the shot and throwing the hammer. A line is drawn on the ground, and each of the players in turn throws the crowbar, which, by the way, is pointed, as far as he possibly can. To succeed, both muscle and knack are necessary, and the winner is regarded as a hero for the time.  All the towns' people, young and old, men and women, girls and boys, repair to see the sport, and the scene on the ground is most picturesque.
