"Sealing" Portsmouth Harbour.- How it was done a Century ago. 1905.

The experiments carried out by the naval authorities last week for defending Portsmouth from an enemy's attack by means of a spiked boom drawn across the harbour, recall the method employed at the same seaport in Nelson's time.  The plan then was to draw a chain taut across the harbour at sunset, and the capstan, which was employed to tighten this cable, as shown by our artist, stood on the spot where the present machinery stands for a like purpose.  Some of the links of the old cable are still to be seen, at low tide, lying in the shingle and covered in seaweed, a relic of the "Gate of Portsmouth" before the age of submarines.
