1- Over twenty-five years' service in Football, as the Secretary of the Football Association, and only a little less as Secretary of the Surrey County C. C., are the best claims C.W. ALCOCK can offer for the good wishes of those who follow cricket or football or both.  A fair Cricketer and Footballer in his school days at Harrow, he subsequently played a good deal of cricket for several of the Wandering Clubs as well as for Essex, till his appointment at the Oval suggested the advisability of withdrawing from active cricket to devote himself strictly to the administrative.  In football he was even better known.  In the formation of the code of rules, which resulted ultimately in what is known as the Association game, he took a leading part.  The foundation of the Wanderers' Club, who won the Football Association Cup five years out of the first eight and three times in succession, was entirely his work, and he Captained the winning Team the year the cup was instituted.  He also Captained the English Eleven in the INternational match with Scotland in 1872.
