For Sale is a Colour Picture removed from a 1937 Calendar by "Wiggins, Teape & Alex. Pirie (Sales) Ltd." showing a Portrait called "The Blue Boy."
Gainsborough was born in 1727 at Sudbury in Suffolk. In 1759 he went to Bath and in 1779 settled in London, where he immediately became popular. "To the end of his life he divided with West the favour of the Court, and with Reynolds the favour of the Town." Probably his own preference was for landscape painting, but the fashionable world of his time demanding portraits, he produced work that places him with Reynolds, in a class apart, the two greatest painters of the eighteenth century. The Blue Boy, a brilliant example of Gainsborough's portraiture, was formerly at Grosvenor House in the possession of the Duke of Westminster. Artist- Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. Size of Picture- 30.5cm. x 21cm.
