Size of Picture- 30.5cm. x 24cm.

Perhaps the best known portrait of the great Siddons.  This picture was painted by Gainsborough about 1785.  Sarah Siddons, born in 1755, was the daughter of Roger Kemble, the manager of a company of strolling players, and his wife Sarah Ward.  "Her extraordinary and peculiar physical endowments, tall and striking figure, brilliant beauty, powerful expressive eyes and solemn dignity of demeanour," enabled her to impart a wonderful majesty to the great dramatic characters she portrayed.  Mrs. Siddons retired from the stage in 1812, and died in London in 1831.
