Sir Joshua Reynolds, the first president of the Royal Academy, was born at the village of Plympton Earl, Devon, in 1723. In 1741 he went to London, and later studied for two or three years in Italy. Upon his return to England Sir Joshua established himself as a portrait painter, and although he had many rivals, including Gainsborough and Romney, his prosperity never appreciably declined. He died in 1792. Reynolds' masterpiece at Hertford House is the portrait of Nelly O'Brien, who was a frequent sitter to Reynolds and a personal friend.
