For Sale is a Colour Portrait removed from a 1937 Calendar by "Wiggins, Teape & Alex. Pirie (Sales) Ltd." showing the painting of "Mrs. Robinson- "Perdita". (In the Wallace Collection, London.) Artist- Thomas Gainsborough. Size of Picture- 30.5cm. x 21cm.
Although mention was made in the Academy announcements of 1782 of a full-length portrait by Gainsborough of Mrs. Robinson as "Perdita," the picture was withdrawn at the last moment, possibly the result of a criticism published in the PUBLIC ADVERTISER which compared Gainsborough's portrait unfavourably with those by Romney and Reynolds of the same lady. The journalist condemned Gainsborough's portrait on the ground that it was not a faithful representation of the sitter, but it is evident that the writer failed to appreciate the other considerations in portrait painting besides the mere likeness. This portrait is considered an unexcelled example of Gainsboroughs' power.
