When the men of H.M.S. Powerful reached the Town Hall they were received by the Mayor (Mr. Pink).  The Guests and members of the Corporation lined the corridor of the grand entrance from the principal door to the entry of the principal hall, which had been handsomely decorated with naval and military trophies in honour of the occasion.  The orchestra was filled with 210 children of the St. Luke's National School, who cheered their loudest, waving red-white-and-blue flags. Among the guests were Sir George White, Lord Northbrook, Admiral Sir M. Culme-Seymour, Lord Durham, Sir Baker Russell, Sir F. Fitzwygram, M.P., and Sir J. Baker, M.P. The toast list was short, and the Mayor set the example in proposing in a few words the first toast, "The Queen and Empire."  The toast was received with tremendous enthusiasm, the bluejackets cheering lustily.  Captain the Hon. Hedworth Lambton, R.N., replied to the toast of the Naval Brigade, and then Lord Northbrook proposed the health of Sir George White.  Sir George, in replying, spoke in warm terms of the good work done by the Naval brigade at Ladysmith.
