Else Reimann (Miss Lilian Braithwaite) with her office-lover, Hans Rudorff (Mr. George Alexander) shortly before the suicide of the pair.  Hans must leave the army if he continue his intimacy with the frail "daughter of the people."  Family pride and tradition being too strong to allow him to forsake his military career, while, on the other hand, love making an irresistable call on him, he resolves to end his life, and is just learning in the scene above depicted that Else is determined to die with him.
