   a- Tom and Joyce Wetheral (Mr. Steff Macdonald and Miss Margaret Bruhling) tell their mother, Lady Wetheral (Miss Marie Tempest), who is forty and fascinating, that the time has come for her to retire in their favour.  She outshines her children, and captures the possible suitors of her daughter.  Taking the hint, Lady Wetheral quits her graceless offspring, and betakes herself to a Devonshire fishing village.
   b- Here she meets one Richard Stern (Mr. Charles V. France), and sets about fascinating him. As Stern is a fresh-air rational-dress crank, she let him examine her foot so that he can prescribe for her a patent boot he favours.  Stern bullies her for her tight-lacing and other artificialities, all the time falling deeper and deeper in love.
   c- Their solitude is broken by the arrival of Tom and Joyce and their father Sir Arthur Wetheral, K.C. The last named has not lived with his family for many years, and now suspects Lady Wetheral and Stern's acquaintance.  But Stern and Joyce have been bathing in the sea, and the girl has saved the man's life.  The picture shows the return from this rescue, a deed which causes Stern to immediately transfer his love from the mother to the daughter.  So once more Lady Wetheral retires in favour of Joyce.
   d- Lady Wetheral, adopting Stern's ideas, wears sandals and a cap, breakfasts off nuts, knits, and reads "improving" books. Stern is seen admiring his supposed convert.
   e- Lady Wetheral, anticipating her second "retirement" and the loss of Stern, turns her battery on to her renegade husband (Mr. W. Grahame browne), who quickly succumbs and returns to her home.
