In what was a splendid and fast race, Cambridge, although generally rowing a slower stroke than their rivals, maintained a lead of from two to four lengths from Putney to Mortlake.  The season, day, and hour fixed for the contest, helped by the weather, caused the public to gather in record numbers to witness what proved to be a hard, grim struggle, although one lacking the excitement of changing positions on the part of the crews.
