The collection of Thorpe does not hand down any more interesting plans than these.  Unaccompanied with elevations, and mere block plans, they are acceptable in the absence of any satisfactory representations of this once famous palace.  The distant view by Vinkenboone (which was first engravedd in folio by the Society of Antiquaries,  with the erroneous name of Richmond)  is the only one worthy of much attention ;  for two old prints by Stent and Daniel King are very small and ill done.  There is, however, an interesting interior view of the Gallery, with portraits of Charles I. and Henrietta Maria, of which there is a folio engraving, and several copies.
Theobalds was commenced about the year 1570, by the great Lord Burghley, then Sir William Cecil, as a residence for his second son ;  and was enlarged by hin about twenty years after to receive his Royal Mistress Queen Elizabeth, who were here honoured him with twelve visits, attended with a large retinue, and each visit costing the Lord Keeper from £2000 to £3000.
It became afterwards the favourite residence of King James I.  who procured it in exchange for the palace amd manor of Hatfield, with the Earl of Salisbury. He died her on the 27th March 1625.
The palace was destroyed by the order of Parliament about 1650.
