"Getting Her Own Back."- The Sinking of the Leipzig by H.M.S. Glasgow. 1915.

For Sale is a Full Page removed from "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, January 2nd, 1915," showing a Drawing by Arthur W. J. Burgess called "Getting Our Own Back."- The Sinking of the Leipzig by H.M.S. Glasgow."

In an account of the successful British action off the Falkland Islands in the early days of December, the correspondent of "the Daily Telegraph'" says : "Meanwhile the 'Glasgow,' which was fighting her second amd more successful battle with the German squadron, had overtaken the 'Leipzig,' and was in process of settling the account that had been due since the fight of November 1st off Coronel," and proceeds to say that after "a two-hour action the German ship, on fire and sinking, hauled down her colours, and hoisted the white flag."  Another account says that during the battle the "Kent" came up, but that the "Glasgow' signalled : "stand off.  I can manage this by myself." After the "Leipzig" sank, one of her officers and twenty-one of the crew were saved, which number would have been greatly increased but for the (possibly accidental) firing of a shell from the doomed vessel after her colours had been struck.  if the reference to a white flag in these accounts is correct, the Germans must be the first nation to take a white flag to sea with them to serve as a signal of defeat, no such signal being required for use in Naval Warfare.
