Perils of the Illiterate. (From Sketches by Miss Emily Lees.) 1888.

For Sale is a Full Page removed from "The Graphic  Christmas Number, 1888,"showing the Following 9 Chromolithographic Sketches Drawn by Miss Emily Lees, called "Perils of the Illiterate."

   1- What made Lizzie and Baby stare
        As they passed the cupboard  ?  Why Something there.
   2- On the topmost shelf looked extremely nice,
       So they fetched a stool and chair in a trice.
   3- Nimble-Legged Lizzie was up like a shot,
        And her hands encircled the coveted pot;
   4- But alas ! it slipped through her fingers, and so 
        Fell on the floor with a snashing blow.
    5- Lizzie herself came tumbling too,
        She overset baby  Who cried boo-hoo !"
    6- It isn't Jam, but it may be spice,
        Lets taste and try it, it must be nice.
    7- What can it be, this powder yellow,
        Whuch burns our mouths, and makes us bellow ?"
        Just then Mamma appeared on the scene,
        You naughty children,  what does this mean ?"
    8- Then Mamma said,  "Darlings listen to me.
         When you have mastered your A. b. >  
        (A labour I own, invokving Pain),.
         You won't take Mustard for Jam again."
     9- So each in a corner was promptly popped,
         And they went on crying until they stopped.
