1- We arrived at Malta in the early morning, and as we steamed slowly into the grand harbour a crowd of gaily painted boats came to meet us and followed us to our moorings. In this crowd there were two rival agents, both very eager to get the proper word in and advertise their own special goods.
2- They raced for the ladder at the side of our trooper as soon as it was lowered.  They bothvjumped at the little landing at the foot og the ladder, and in their eagerness hustled each other into the water, much to the amusement of us all, as we had noticed them in the crowd of boats for some time ;  their respective boatmen were also very much amused.
3- However they were soon picked out, kicking and spluttering, and loudly abusing each other in the noisy Maltese tongue, from which all we learnt was that one was  Emmanuel and the other Michael.
4- The last we saw of them was that Emmanuel's boat  had got away first and his garments were hanging out to dry, whilst Michael was gesticulating wildly, his boatman wringing out his coat and trying to pacify him.
