This beautiful and accomplished lady was the third and youngest daughter of Sir Charles Bingham, who sat in Parliament for County Mayo, and was in 1795 created Earl of Lucan. Her elder sister, Lavinia, marriedin 1781 the second Earl Spencer.  Sir Joshua Reynolds enjoyed the patronage of the Spencer family.  Their freinds and connections resorted in his Studio, and he ended by painting quite a family circle. It was in 1786 that the Hon. Miss Bingham, and the Countess, her sister, came to sit to the painter, and their portraits were exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year.  Sir Joshua evidently enjoyed painting these young ladies, who were both animated and beautiful, and he succeeded admirably in his task.  Horace Walpole describes the Hon. Anne's likeness as "extremely lively," and Leslie observes "Heads so simple, lovely, and lively as Lady Spencer and her sister."  Both portraits were engraved by Bartolozzi in his best manner, and published as a pair, but that, of Miss Anne Bingham, reproduced above, is now rarelymet with.  Captivating as Miss Bingham appears on Reynold's canvas, and accomplished as we know she was from contemporary records, she was never persuaded to change her maiden name, but died unmarried on March 6th, 1840.
