              The Train-Bands marching from London to relieve Gloucester, 1643.
The defence of Gloucester was most pertinacious, but it was on the point of capitulating when it was relieved by the Army under Essex, of which the Train-bands formed a considerable portion.
Two of the regimants of Train-Bands, the one before consisting of pikemen, and that behind of musqueteers, are marching in a close column westward, along fleet Street, towards and through Temple Bar.  A commanding officer, riding beside the musqueteers, in passing, interchanges a few words of gallantry with a couple of pretty puritan maidens, who, stooping over a low wall, look inquisitively into his face.
The most prominent group is that of a comely-looking mother, seated with her children on the battlemented porch of her house.  A tear trickles down the mother's cheek, she is inconsolable at parting from her lord.  At the front of a balcony of his own mansion, bearing on its side the ancient arms of the City of London, stands the energetic Lord Mayor Pennington, with encouraging mein, proudly resting his hand on a truncheon, and looking as though himself ready to take the command of warriors such as those defiling before him.
