                                    The Execution of Montrose,  1650.
The Marquis of Montrose and the Marquis of Argyll, father of the Argyll in Mr. Ward's painting, were the most remarkable men in Scotland during the revolutionary struggle ;  the former fighting gallantly for the King, Argyll taking part with the Covenanters.  Both came to an ignominious death on the scaffold.  On the morning of his execution, Montrose dressed himself in rich attire,  more becoming a bridegroom than a criminal going to execution.  The savage-looking executioner is tying round his neck Dr. Wishart's narrative of his exploits, while a formal old covenanter, in a black gown, holds the "manifesto" issued in the name of his ungrateful master, Charles II.

Condition is Very Good, with a Damp stain in the margin only. (See Photo).
