Meltonian. (Cream for Good Shoes.) 1934.

                                               A Shining Name.
In the early years of the nineteenth century a young man of elegant taste and distinguished manner delighted to be known in Town as a Corinthian or a Macaroni.  If he followed the hounds in the hard-riding Melton Country, then it was a delicate compliment to refer to him as a Meltonian. All Meltonians were lovers of good horses and good leather.
About this time Edward Brown came to London and quickly made his name as a manufacturer of blacking.  An old cash book shews that among his customers were the Duke of Wellington, Lord Brougham, the Lady St. Aubyn, Lord Chesterfield, Lord Lascelles, and numerous Meltonians.  Out of compliment to his distinguished customers, therefore,  Edward Brown named his product 'Meltonian.'  His descendants still manufacture Meltonian -but to-day it is a shoe cream, a dressing which has superseded both blacking and paste; and people who delight in good leather will always have Meltonian to do them honour.
