The Men Who Try the Wembley Dogs. 1938.

For Sale are Two Pages removed from "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, February 4th, 1938," called "The Men Who try the Wembley Dogs," showing on the Front Page a Photograph of Colonel E. Middleton-Perry, M.R.C.V.S.,  the Veterinary Surgeon at Wembley.

Inside the Front Page shows the  Following Photographs called  "Preparing for the Greyhound Racing Season."

   1- Entering the Traps : The dogs which have been weighed earlier that morning, weight being one of the surest guides to condition, are placed in the traps.  They are numbered as for racing, the officials have duplicated lists with corresponding numbers.

   2- Adjusting the Hare :  The modern "Hare" is pulled round the track by a wire and runs on a kind of sled.  The wire passes under the track and up to the control box, now slung beneath the roof of the stand.

   3- Off! :  The dogs to be tried are released from the trap, the opening of which automatically starts the electrical timing gear and sets the clock in motion.  The man with a flag also makes a visual signal to the timekeeper.

   4- Passing The Timekeeper :  When the dogs pass the winning-post for the first time no electrical ray is operated ;  but as soon as they have passed once the timekeeper switches the ray into action.  The electric clock is stopped when the first dog passes the finishing line.

   5- Rounding A Turn :  The modern "hare," being pulled by a short wire attached to the main cable, swings out at the turns and is said to keep the dogs, who tend to run inside it, closer to the rails than the old type, which was on a fixed rod.

   6- The Screen :  This is pulled across the course when the dogs are due to pull up, some distance after passing the winning-post.

   7- Before the Kill :  A few yards in front of the screen the man on the railings throws another "hare" on to the track.  The dogs pull up and worry this, which saves the proper electric hare from their attentions.

   8- Rescuing the Hare :  Trainers hurry to their charges as soon as they st to worry the "hare."  Here one is putting a dog on a lead while three on his right are having a tussle.

   9- The Timing Ray :  This ray goes across the winning-post.  The leading dog interrupts it when passing the post, which stops the electric timing clock.

  10- The Timekeeper :  Mr. J. Palmer, once a famous boxing referee who handled one of the fights between Carpentier and Beckett,  checking the time.  The electric clock, in the right-hand box, is checked against two stop watches and seldom is there a difference of more than a hundredth of a second.  In the box on the left is the switch.

  11- Recording the Results :  Recording the Results :  Mr. J. Tetlow, Assistant Resident Kennel Manager;  Mr. R. H. Jolliffe,  Resident Kennel Manager;  Mr. E. B. Denison, D. S. O., Judge and Stipendiary Steward;  and Captain A. E. Brice, the famous Coursing Judge who the judged the Waterloo  Cup for a number of years and is the Director of Racing at Wembley.  They are watching the trials seated above the timekeeper and recording the results and times.  It is the data obtained from these trials which enables exciting races to be arranged.
