The Essex Union. 1938. (Hunting).

For Sale are Two Pages removed from "the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, February 4th, 1938," showing an Article with the Following Hunting Photographs for "The Essex Union."

   1- By Bassett's Farm :  the Essex Union returning along a lane by Bassett's Farm after drawing the spinneys by the Chelmer and Blackwater Canal. This is the hunt boundary, the country on the other side of the water being East Essex.  In front of the field is the huntsman, A. Webster.

   2- Mr. L. Kirk was one of the few people out in a red coat on this rather unfashionable day where large woodlands predominate.

   3- The Meet :  The Essex Union Hounds with the huntsman, A. Webster, and the whip, R. Hoare, on the right at the meet at Riffham's Crossroads, near Danbury, a place apparently entirely unknown to locals.

   4- Experience :  Miss Kemble, a very well-known follower of the Essex-Union, who has hunted in this part of the world for many seasons, with Mr. G. Ratcliffe.

   5- Keeping Warm :  One of the Essex Union ladies gallops to the bottom end of toft's passing several enthusiasts in bicycles who seemed to get their machines through woods and over all kinds of obstacles.

   6- A Spot of Mud :  Some of the field, with Major Hitchcock in the van, splash through a deep place on Lingwood Common.

   7- Get Away, 'Art to Him! :  The first whip, R. Hoare, sees the tail hounds over a ride on Lingwood Common, a laarge expanse of woodland and bracken joining up with Blake's Wood.

   8- Wuile Hounds Drew :  The Essex Union field waiting while hounds drew Toft's.  the result here was unfortunately disappointing and hounds moved on to the Navigation Canal and then to the Retreat.

   9- Going Into Toft's :  The huntsman, A Webster, and the hounds just before the latter went into Toft's. Judging by the way hounds went into this covert, one would have thought scent exceptionally good.  Actually, this was by no means the casse.

  10- The Leading Hounds :  the pack coming out of the thick undergrowth on Lingwood Common.  This and Blake's Wood, which adjoins it, are difficult places to get a fox away from.

  11- The Way To Do It :  Mr. Dereck Wigan takes a post and rails in good style by the Retreat.  Unfortunately, the fox eventually broke in the opposite direction.

Condition is Very Good.
