Wembley Review : Points of Order at the English Cup Final. 1932.

   d- Great defensive play by the Arsenal Goalkeeper :  Moss runs out to intercept a pass between the Newcastle United Forwards.
   e- The Pass which resulted in a goal :  The British movietone news film suggests thhe ball went behind before being passed inwards.
   f- Arsenal players protesting that the ball had gone out of play :  Moss (Grey Jersey) running out to speakto the Referee.

It is the custom on the soccer grounds for each team to come out separately, with a slight pause between the appearance of the one and the other.  The result is that, as a rule, a blind man can tell which is the home team from the magnitude or otherwise of the shout that goes up.  But all this was altered for the English Cup final at Wembley, which is becoming more and more like a pageant and less and less like a game of football.  The two teams came out together, led by the captains, and the players paired off according to their positions on the field.  There were 92, 298 spectators and the gate-money amounted to the enormous sum of £24,688.

In the English Cup final at Wembley, the gods ranged themselves on the side of justice, which is not their invariable rule.  Newcastle United by not have beaten Arsenal had the referee not awarded them a goal which the majority opinion, supported by the evidence of the camera, would have disallowed.  As the film cutting reproduced above suggests the ball went behind and out of play before being passed in from the right wing to enable Allen to score for the winners.  Nevertheless the result was just.  Newcastle fully deserved their victory and no one outside Highbury, nor by any means all those inside, would have the referee's decision rescinded, whether it was right or wrong.  The Arsenal team, deprived of the inspiration of the great James, who was a spectator of the game and saw, with mixed feelings no doubt, the Queen present the Cup to the winners, were clearly outplayed and might have suffered a Heavy defeat butfor the superb defence of their goalkeeper.
