This year's Air Pageant, which is again expected to draw huge crowds to Hendon Aerodrome this Saturday, has its humorous side as heretofore.  One of the air-clowns is the famous Flight-lieutenant G. H. Stainforth, A.F.C., who piloted the Schneider Trophy machine that put up the new world's air speed record.  His role this time consists in piloting pterodactyl painted up to represent an unearthly monster, whi winks at the crowd.  The upper picture, taken during rehearsals for the display of formation flying, shows a squadron of Hawker-Harts day bombers in the air.  The Squadron leader's instructions flying of this sort, are usually conveyed by visible signals, wireless being dispensed with.

5- Follow-The-Leader  Upside-Down :  Tiger moths, piloted by Instructions from Central Flying School, Demonstrate Inverted Flying.
6- The Biggest Service Type Flying Boat in the World :  Iris V setting out on her maiden cruise from Felixstowe to the North of Scotland.

Inverted flying is to be demonstrated at the Air Pageant by instructors from the Flying School at Wittering, led by Flight-Lieutenant P. McG. Watt.  Iris V, who began her maiden cruise from Felixstowe the other day, bound for the North of Scotland, is a development of Iris 111, with greater engine power, having the more powerful Rolls-Royce Buzzard engines in place of the Rolls-Royce Condors. It is the biggest service type flying boat in existence to-day, though the great military Short multi-seater, which is to have six Buzzard engines, will surpass it when ready for use.  Flying boats are intended for coastal defence and reconnaissance work in case of war.
