When Wimbledon opened this week, H. Ellsworth Vines was the only player, other than Henri Cochet, of course, whose record would allow him to win without causing some surprise.  Although defeated this week before at Queen's Club, he had then not lost his sea legs and was entirely new to English conditions.  Everyone knew he was capable of better things.  Vines is not yet twenty-one, but has a superb match temperament.  Probably only Cochet is a finer fifth-set player in the world.  Vines comes from Los Angeles.

Condition is Very Good.
