A very valuable part of the County Council's Work is the provision, under the Weights and Measures Acts of 1878 and 1889, for ensuring that all weights and measures and weighing instruments used in trade are just. For this purpose a staff of nearly a hundred people are employed by the Council. Something like 2,500,000 appliances are examined every year, of which about a fifth have been known to be rejected. The amount of fees received for the verification and stamping of weights run into over £7,500, while the fines imposed are more than £400. These pictures have been taken for us by Clarke and Hyde to illustrate this aspect of the council's work.
