Lieut. Ulysses and his bluejackets hit on a happy idea to save themselves from the Sirens.  To prevent hearing their sweet music, and thereby being lured to death, they place beeswax in their ears, and pull away for all they are worth. Ulysses, however, wanting to hear the music, and yet to continue to live, does not put wax in his own ears, but to be secure from death has himself bound by ropes to the mast of the ship.  This illustration shows him waving defiance to the fair ladies as he passes them.
